born to talk & COOK

In my 20s, before I graduated from college and way before I ended up in NYC and ended up being a chef, I had a motto that I screamed at anyone who wanted to listen to me: “My mission in life is to make people happy”. More often, I would shout in Spanish  “¡Yo solo quiero hacer feliz a la gente!”; in my head, it makes more sense to scream my feelings in my native tongue.

Who knows, maybe that clown costume I used in 4th grade for a School end of the Year Show had something to do with it; I always made people laugh, was taken out of the classroom for talkin in grade school, my scores were always A+ but the teachers would put litte notes on my report cards: “ Charla mucho en fila!” meaning “she talks a lot in line!”.

I was always a gabber and a clown!

My brother Gonzalo and I are ready to go to Teatro Astral for the school's end-of-year play. Buenos Aires 1979.

The clown costume is a true story ( I only have this one picture with my brother) and none from a couple of years later, when I had my “first job” dressed in that same costume, sewn by my grandma, the wig made by my Dad, and my face full of clown makeup, which I learned by watching pictures. I was a birthday party entertainer; for little children, a business idea I had with a friend who was only a year older than me, we were managed by her Mom, who drove us around in her old car, trough Buenos Aires in the ealry 80’s, no one thought it was weird 2 pre-teens dressed like clowns did magic tricks, sang songs and put on puppet shows for little children; and got paid for it.

I started Gaby’s Kitchen to teach cooking, deeply inspired by Jamie Oliver, a bunch of years after finishing Culinary School, and after realizing my love for teaching was where I was finally able to do that- teach a skill and make people happy with my jokes and my stories.

And apparently it works; every interaction with strangers in the street ends in a laugh, or whenever I run into someone who had watched me on YouTube, they always have something nice to say, as you made my Pandemic days better, and that feels amazing. I think that is what I want, my purpose in life; this life I have is to make people happy and teach them how to cook!.

Everything I share here at Gaby’s Kitchen comes from my heart, with all my love and effort for you to enjoy.
